Iron ore mining began at the Itakpe deposit by open pit method under the management of the National Iron Ore Mining Company (NIOMCO) in 1987 as successor to the Associated Iron Ore Company established in 1979. NIOMCO is expected to supply ore concentrates to the steel works at Ajaokuta and Aladja, as well as producing ore concentrates for export.

Reducibility Tests on Itakpe Iron Ore
A reduction temperature of 760OC, a pellet size of 1.2mm diameter and an H2/CO ratio of 1.5 were found to be suitable for a successful reduction of the Itakpe iron ore. A reduction temperature increase beyond this value would be accompanied by a corresponding increase in the product discharge rate.
