The electrolyte is a 2-5% solution of aluminium oxide (Al 2 O 3) dissolved in cryolite (sodium hexafluoroaluminate(III), Na 3 AlF 6). The electrolyte mixture is kept liquid at 955 °C. This compares with the melting point of pure aluminium oxide of 2072 °C. The use of cryolite thus reduces the costs of keeping the electrolyte liquid.
